Welcome to the 2nd edition from Inn-News. A little sunshine combined with a cool freshness tells me that Spring is definitely here. I love to go walking on the moors when the weather is like this and get away from it all. I hope you are giving yourself a bit of time for you, since running a pub business can be a hectic lifestyle! This month we are talking about the opportunity to buy your own pub with Innscribe’s professional help. VAT going on-line if your turnover is over £100k and more Top Tips on how to make things a little different.
VAT Goes On-Line
The computer age is upon us, HMRC are phasing out paper returns from 1st April 2010, if your turnover is over £100k a year you will be required to submit your returns on-line.
Our VAT department is gearing up for this change and will require some simple details to facilitate this. Your VAT payment will also need to be made on-line whether it is by Internet, Telephone banking or direct debit. If you have any questions then please contact our VAT experts and they will be happy to help.
If your annual turnover is less than £100k then you have until 2012 at the latest by which everyone will have to file on-line.
For further information go to the HMRC’s website and click on the page titled Moving Paper Returns on-line.

More Top Tips ..try pepping up your menu
Why not take a leaf out of the Cheesemans book a pub in Lincolnshire and try a different catering supplier for your party menu. They have gone from sausage rolls and sandwiches to mini deep fried brie, camembert and tempura vegetables via a supplier called Moy Park Foodservice or just regularly changing your menu, but keeping a few favourites on of course, often impresses regular customers.
I recently had a lovely meal at Sous le Nez restaurant in Leeds near the train station, I was impressed with the variety of dishes and the food was absolutely wonderful so I will be going back but would expect them to vary their menu after a couple of months so I will let you know.
If you have been impressed by a particular menu, it might even be your own, let me know and I will write a little something for you in our next newsletter.

Top Tips for improving business in the quiet months, try something a little different.
Anything a bit quirky or out of the ordinary seems to work…a London Enterprise pub, The Fox in Shoreditch, gave the customer dice with their bill, between Sep and Dec last year and anything over an 8 the meal was FREE! With a 30% increase in covers they felt it was a great idea…not sure about the effect on the profits though, I suppose you are at the mercy of lady luck! And with beer price increases not being cushioned by most breweries apart from Marstons, I’m not sure I would be willing to take the risk.
Maybe ideas a little less risky like Mitchells & Butlers Victoria pub in Leeds offering customers a choice of pint glasses, either the standard tulip or the old fashioned dimpled version. Again something a little different for the ale drinker that won’t break the bank!
If you are doing something a little different please e-mail me at michelle@innscribeuk.com and let me know.
