50,000 New Apprenticeships in the Food Industry

Part of an industry push to get more young people into skilled food jobs, we all have to eat and we all like to go out to eat and there’s nothing better than a person who can cook and cook well…getting young people back to working with their hands is something that will stand them in good stead.

Food & Agriculture Minister Jim Paice said “These 50,000 apprenticeships show that the food industry is serious about becoming a place where young people seek out skilled and fulfilling careers. I would encourage anyone out there looking for a challenging career in a growing sector to think about the food industry”

It might be something to look at if your outlet fits the cirteria to take on an apprentice who could be trained up by your chef for example, giving a young person a good start in their career and your establishment a trainee chef, current wages from Oct 2011 would be £2.60 a hour but many licensees give a little extra research has shown that the average take home pay is around £170 per week and off course holiday entitlement is at least 20 days a year.

You can use apprenticeship schemes to train both new & existing employees. The National Apprenticeship Service has overall responsibility for Apprenticeships in England. They support some of the financial cost in the off the job training at the colleges and learning providers, the on the job training takes place at your outlet.

Something a little different …

James May came across an Irish Pub that doubled as a hardware store which I thought was a little different. Then it got me thinking that a hardware store is fine for blokes but what about the women. If my local pub had a monthly feature of doing handbag, makeup, skincare or even clothes parties once a month especially running up to Xmas that would definitely be a hit. Maybe handbags in one room, football in another and kids movies in another if you’ve got room and you have something for all the family!

If anyone has any ideas they wish to share on how to improve trade in these difficult times please let me know and i will feature this in our next newsletter. I might even send you a little prize through for your time.
